HELIX TURNS RIVER CREE INTO A FULL-THROTTLE ROCK PARTY
Thursday night at River Cree Resort & Casino, Canadian hard rock veterans Helix delivered a no-frills, high-voltage performance that reminded everyone why they've remained one of the country's most beloved rock acts for more than five decades.
The Helix Stand
Frontman Brian Vollmer was in fine form, working the crowd with his trademark humour, storytelling, and unmistakable vocals. Backed by bassist Daryl Gray, guitarists Chris Julke and Mark Chichkan, and drummer Jamie Constant, the band hit the stage with the confidence and chemistry that only comes from years of experience. The current lineup honoured the band's rich legacy while continuing to push Helix forward following the passing of longtime drummer Greg "Fritz" Hinz in 2024.

I was able to sit in an interview with Brian earlier in the day and the humor, wisdom and understanding was evident within the first few minutes.
His second book is in the works, with an expected release date coming soon. He is focusing this one on his time on the road, doing the now dead bar circuits. He speaks of this time on the road as a foundation, that foundation that allowed his band the power to perfect their performances and give them the strength to withstand the fluctuations of the industry.
His experience is evident and his dedication to the fans was on full display.
The setlist was stacked with Helix staples, including Rock You, Deep Cuts the Knife, Wild in the Streets, and the crowd-pleasing anthem Heavy Metal Love. Fans packed the venue singing along to every chorus, turning River Cree into one giant rock-and-roll choir.
One of the night's standout moments came when the band launched into a spirited cover of Slade's "Get Down and Get With It." The glam-rock classic sung by bassist Daryl Gray, injected an extra burst of energy into the evening, with the audience clapping, dancing, and shouting along as Helix put their own gritty stamp on the fan favourite. It was a fitting nod to one of the bands that helped shape the sound and attitude of hard rock.
Between songs, Vollmer reflected on the band's remarkable journey and thanked the loyal fans who have stood by them through the decades. There was an authenticity to the evening—no flashy gimmicks, just seasoned musicians delivering exactly what the audience came for: loud guitars, thunderous drums, and timeless rock songs.
More than 50 years after their formation, Helix proved they haven't lost a step. Thursday night's River Cree performance wasn't simply a nostalgia trip—it was a celebration of Canadian rock resilience and a reminder that when Helix takes the stage, the party is guaranteed to follow.
